Week 10 - Visual Communication Online Formal Semiotics is the systematic study of the system of signs. Social Semiotic embodies formal semiotics and also asks how people use signs to construct the life of a community. Ferdinand de Saussure is the man known to have founded modern semiotics in the early 1900's. Michael Halliday coined the term "social semiotic" in 1978. The importance of social semiotics is to help a community clearly define terms, thoughts and ideas into symbols. It was challenging to find written material that explained this topic well for me. Two Scholarly journals I found to help me were Social Semiotics by Jeff Bezemer and Carey Jewitt published in 2009, and Interpreting the Rhetoric of Visual Advertisements by Karen Ye et al . published in 2019. The first journal assisted with the basic understanding and the second helped with the visual aspect. One of the best videos I found to he...

Week 9 - Online Arguments This was a very challenging assignment for me to work on. I do not subscribe to, seek out, or participate in online arguments. I try to avoid them in person and with friends as well. Partly because I miss some of the social nuances, partly because I was raised in a violent household, partly because I choose not to expose myself to negative energy. With that being said, I am attempting this as an academic exercise. I chose to be inspired by my boyfriends interest in Elon Musk for this adventure. There are plenty of fans and haters with most subjects and people and Elon has plenty of both. The specific thread I chose to analyze is Elon Musk gets destroyed by facts and logic . I chose ...

Week 8 - Toulmin Method The Toulmin Method is a more sophisticated way to construct an argument. The typical argument may consist of a claim, reason, support, and warrant. Toulmin's method adds in qualifiers and rebuttals to create and analyze a better argument. There are six components to this method: claims, reasons, evidence, warrants, qualifiers, and rebuttals (page 318). The claim is an opinion the author is asking the audience to accept. The reasons are the facts, data or reasoning the claim is being based on. Evidence is the data or ideals used to back up the reasons. Warrants link the evidence to the claim. Qualifiers point out where the claim may not be true all the time, or its limitations. The rebuttals are when the author addresses opposing views. An example of an article that used the Toulmin Method to argue against the term Gamification had an added bonus of discussing how they used Tomlin's Method of Argu...

Week 7 - Discussion - Research Podcast The Rhubarb People's Collective and why you care what they think Photo: Kitchen Konfidence The use of good grammar goes a long way in personal and professional communications. In the podcast titled "Make a Good Impression in Writing Online" , Stever Robbins (2029) gives an example of someone posting "i love rhubarb cupcake" online. He tells the tale of how a fictitious representative from The People's Rhubarb Collective reads this comment and interprets it to mean that the writer intends on butchering a poor rhubarb and making it into cupcake! Then a chain of events could have happened where the author needed to go into the rhubarb protection program. What the author may have meant was "I love rhubarb, cupcake." instead. Without proper grammar the intended meaning can get lost in translation. Art: McGraw-Hill Education Writing content for online requires strong grammar and structure. B...

Week 6 - The Battle for Public Opinion How is social media changing the way people document history? Because social media and smartphones are more readily available to the public individuals are able to post photos and videos very easily. There is very little time between or thought between capturing photos or videos and posting. There is rarely a gatekeeper processing the data before being shared with the world. This can have differing effects on how information is being shared. In some instances it can be beneficial to see how employees are treating customers if it is an exceptionally good or bad incident. But we may not be seeing the complete story, all of the factors contributing to positive or negative treatment. How have people used social media to win the hearts and minds of people? Provide examples. Cat videos. Plain and simple. Cat videos and pictures have won the hearts and minds of millions of people, eve...

Week 5 - Business Assessment Purl Soho is a brick and mortar, as well as online, business that specializes in higher end fiber and fiber arts supplies. This is the place I go to purchase my luxury yarn to knit and weave with. They have a library of free patterns for knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing, and weaving available on their website. Their patterns reflect their website and social media presence perfectly. Modern, understated, and clean. www.purlsoho.com (double weft scarf pattern) Their LinkedIn page is understated and provides basic details about the company, its size, and the physical location map (although the physical store is still closed as a result of the pandemic). One is able to go to the website via the link provided on the page. On Instagram they post pictures of new patterns along with the information about sizes and yarns to use for knit and crochet projects. Facebook adds an extra element of being abl...

W eek 4 - Digital Native or Immigrant Digital immigrant vs. digital native(source: www.craigaharrington.wordpress.com) Being a Gen Xer I definitely fall into the Native Immigrant category, as defined by Marc Prensky in his article Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants . I grew up playing video games and had a personal home computer but they were very different from today's technology. Heck, I didn't start texting until 2009. I still prefer a physical book to looking at a screen to read and hand writing my notes for class. But I am adapting to the newer way of learning. I made the choice to attend OSU eCampus (fully online) for my last two years of school instead of physically going to the University down the road. It takes me a little bit of time to get comfortable with new technology but I am resilient and adaptable. I found a tool that bridges my love of handwriting notes and saving paper/uploading them to my laptop: the Rocketbook! Those...
