Week 9 - Online Arguments This was a very challenging assignment for me to work on. I do not subscribe to, seek out, or participate in online arguments. I try to avoid them in person and with friends as well. Partly because I miss some of the social nuances, partly because I was raised in a violent household, partly because I choose not to expose myself to negative energy. With that being said, I am attempting this as an academic exercise. I chose to be inspired by my boyfriends interest in Elon Musk for this adventure. There are plenty of fans and haters with most subjects and people and Elon has plenty of both. The specific thread I chose to analyze is Elon Musk gets destroyed by facts and logic . I chose ...

Week 8 - Toulmin Method The Toulmin Method is a more sophisticated way to construct an argument. The typical argument may consist of a claim, reason, support, and warrant. Toulmin's method adds in qualifiers and rebuttals to create and analyze a better argument. There are six components to this method: claims, reasons, evidence, warrants, qualifiers, and rebuttals (page 318). The claim is an opinion the author is asking the audience to accept. The reasons are the facts, data or reasoning the claim is being based on. Evidence is the data or ideals used to back up the reasons. Warrants link the evidence to the claim. Qualifiers point out where the claim may not be true all the time, or its limitations. The rebuttals are when the author addresses opposing views. An example of an article that used the Toulmin Method to argue against the term Gamification had an added bonus of discussing how they used Tomlin's Method of Argu...

Week 7 - Discussion - Research Podcast The Rhubarb People's Collective and why you care what they think Photo: Kitchen Konfidence The use of good grammar goes a long way in personal and professional communications. In the podcast titled "Make a Good Impression in Writing Online" , Stever Robbins (2029) gives an example of someone posting "i love rhubarb cupcake" online. He tells the tale of how a fictitious representative from The People's Rhubarb Collective reads this comment and interprets it to mean that the writer intends on butchering a poor rhubarb and making it into cupcake! Then a chain of events could have happened where the author needed to go into the rhubarb protection program. What the author may have meant was "I love rhubarb, cupcake." instead. Without proper grammar the intended meaning can get lost in translation. Art: McGraw-Hill Education Writing content for online requires strong grammar and structure. B...

Week 6 - The Battle for Public Opinion How is social media changing the way people document history? Because social media and smartphones are more readily available to the public individuals are able to post photos and videos very easily. There is very little time between or thought between capturing photos or videos and posting. There is rarely a gatekeeper processing the data before being shared with the world. This can have differing effects on how information is being shared. In some instances it can be beneficial to see how employees are treating customers if it is an exceptionally good or bad incident. But we may not be seeing the complete story, all of the factors contributing to positive or negative treatment. How have people used social media to win the hearts and minds of people? Provide examples. Cat videos. Plain and simple. Cat videos and pictures have won the hearts and minds of millions of people, eve...
